The Uncarina Story: Caudiciforms from Madagascar

Idria Columnaris or 'the Boojum Tree'

Call it what you want, the idria columnaris is a very unusal plant.  There is some doubt about its classification, even though it is usually associated with the fouquieraceae.  In their habitat in Baja California, there are stories of them living to over 800 years.  But the truth is that they may live to closer to a 100 years

They are grown from seeds, and in their adult life can reach over 60 feet/20 metres.  The tree consists of main whitish trunk with slender sidewards stems with grey geen leaves.  Its is somewhat of a winter grower losing most of its leaves in the summer.  It survives easily in extreme weather whether intense heat or extreme cold.  During the hot and dry months the tree loses all of its leaves.

Zygosicyos Tripartitus   Another interesting plant from Madagascar which can develop a caudex of at least 10 cm in diameter.  It also produces yellow-green flowers.
